Principal Message

This year, our schoolwide Belonging Goal has a special focus on helping every student feel seen, valued, and recognized. Our school wide theme is once again Bee You, Bee Kind, and BeeLong. We’re excited to share a few of the ways we are doing this together as a school community.

Buddy Classes
Each classroom has been paired with a Buddy Class, and once a month they get together for a shared activity. We have one Friday a month set aside for this, but classes are welcome to meet more often. In October and November, Buddy Class activities focused on getting to know one another, showing kindness, and practicing gratitude. These connections help students build friendships across grade levels and feel a stronger sense of belonging at school.

Student Leadership & Principal Advisory
We are also expanding student leadership opportunities. Our student leaders support our school by helping with assembly setup and cleanup, greeting students and families, serving as ambassadors to new students, and helping keep our school grounds clean. In addition, we have launched a new Principal Advisory Team. This group of student leaders meets monthly with the principal to share student perspectives, offer input on school decisions, and talk through any issues or ideas that arise.

Recognizing Positive Choices
To celebrate students who follow expectations and show kindness aligned with our Bee You, Bee Kind, BeeLong theme, any staff member may award a student a HoneyComb for going above and beyond our schoolwide expectations. Students who receive a HoneyComb are recognized with lunch with the principal, a shout-out on the morning announcements, and a special certificate.

We are also honoring students who demonstrate positive behavior over time. Students with no behavior referrals will be invited to special recesses throughout the year. In addition, students who have no referrals for all of Trimester 1, for Trimesters 1 and 2 combined, and for the full school year will receive special recognition celebrating their efforts.

This week students with no referrals for Trimester 1, ending on November 26 will receive a certificate and a special key chain.

On-Time Attendance & Principal for a Day
We are also honoring students who demonstrate positive behavior over time. Students with no behavior referrals will be invited to special recesses throughout the year. In addition, students who have no referrals for all of Trimester 1, for Trimesters 1 and 2 combined, and for the full school year will receive special recognition celebrating their efforts.

In partnership with our PTSA, we have also added a Principal for a Day raffle. Students earn raffle tickets by attending PTSA/school events, such as our recent Title/PTSA night, or they may purchase additional tickets through PTSA during events. We will have two Principal for a Day drawing this year. Our first winner was announced last week. She will be our Principal for the Day on January 9.

Thank you for all you do to support your child and our school community. We are proud of our students and the many ways they show kindness and help others feel like they belong.

Preventing Winter Melt: A Parent’s Guide for Keeping Students Engaged During Winter Break

Winter break is a much-anticipated time for students to relax, spend time with family, and recharge. However, the return to school after the holidays can be a real challenge for some students as routines resume and the excitement of the season fades away.

  • Fun Winter Reading Challenges: Turn reading into a fun activity by setting a winter reading goal. Celebrate every book or chapter your child completes, and consider small rewards for progress. You can even gift books that spark new interests, inspiring them to explore different subjects and expand their imagination.

  • Keep Moving: Even in the cold weather, staying physically active is important for mental health. Research shows that physically active children tend to demonstrate better memory and focus. Encourage outdoor activities like winter sports or even family walks, these not only boost mood and well-being but also help improve memory and focus.

  • Set Small, Achievable Learning Goals: Break learning down into manageable chunks. For example, aim to learn one new vocabulary word each day or solve one math problem every other day. These small goals keep students’ minds engaged while allowing plenty of time for fun and relaxation.

Safety Reminder

We understand there are times that you may have a classroom or teacher need or that your student is arriving to school after 9:00 a.m. For safety purposes, you must check in at the office to sign in and obtain a name tag, if there is a need for you to go to your student’s classroom.

Our priority is ensuring the safety of our Fairmount community. We value your partnership and appreciate your understanding!
