The Great Washington ShakeOut

Dear Families,

On October 16th at 10:16 a.m., Fairmount Elementary School staff and students will be participating in the Great Washington ShakeOut, the world's largest earthquake drill. This is a great opportunity to start a conversation with your family about earthquake safety and prepare for potential emergencies.
The most important step during an earthquake is to Drop, Cover, and Hold On. Here’s what that means:

  • DROP  to the ground before the shaking knocks you down.
  • COVER your head and neck with your arms or crawl for cover under a sturdy table or desk.
  • HOLD ON  to your shelter until the shaking stops.
Please take a few moments to practice this with your family at home. You can even make it a game by playing the "Earthquake Game," where everyone practices their response whenever someone says "Earthquake!"

Beyond the drill, here are a few other steps your family can take:

  • Create a family emergency plan: Discuss where you will meet if you are separated and designate an out-of-state contact with whom everyone can call or text to check in. Texting often works better than calling when phone lines are overloaded.
  • Assemble a disaster supply kit: Gather a supply of water, non-perishable food, flashlights, and a first-aid kit. A good goal is to have enough supplies to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.
  • Secure your space: Walk through your home and identify hazards. Secure heavy items like bookcases, televisions, and large appliances to prevent them from toppling over during a quake.
By taking these small steps, we can ensure our community is better prepared to face a potential disaster. Your preparedness at home supports our efforts to keep your children safe at school.
